The committee was established to unite the work of the 11 catechism centres in the seven parishes in the Erbil governorate. There are 104 teachers working as volunteers. This is to give the catechism centres and teachers access to sufficient resources and training opportunities, plus to empower and encourage them in effective catechism formation. The Catechism Central Committee’s core aim is to strengthen belief among our young people (aged between 5-18 years: approx. 1000); it is to inspire them to live according to how Jesus Christ taught all men. In addition to regular weekly catechism activities in different parishes during the year, the following key projects are planned: Lesson planning Workshops, Liturgical celebrations, Spiritual & Educational Catechism Camps for different age groups.

Description

The CUE is situated in Erbil the capital of Kurdistan. Ankawa consider a city district not a village. House rental in Ankawa is about twice the rental of housing in the Nineveh Plain. When students rent a house, they also have to pay for electricity. The feedback from the Nineveh Plain is that although students want to come to the CUE, they cannot afford the accommodation in Erbil. Accommodation has been a challenge as there is no Halls of Residence/Dorms. By supporting the student with accommodation costs would be extremely helpful to the CUE recruitment process and very supportive to the Christian families to say that the university could provide accommodation on top of the tuition fee to these poorer families in the Nineveh Plains.

Healthcare – Maryamana Hospital needy patients supporting those who cannot afford healthcare, Chronic medicines
Description

Preventative medicine will save lives so without help the poor would suffer and lose hope; for them it is an opportunity cost as paying for medicine means they cannot support their families as they would wish to as they would have to sacrifice some basic need to pay for the medical treatment, as it is unplanned for in their tight budgets. Many IDPs have not worked since August 2014 due to the lack of jobs. Those who are not on government salaries, must depend on savings, family, and neighbours to find money for rental and food. The sick in Ankawa and surrounding villages do not have money for life saving drugs nor surgery. If they were able to borrow the money, they would be in debt for the rest of their lives, as employment is a long-term problem in a war torn and recession hit country. It will affect the education of their children, and what they can spend on rental, food, and clothing.  Funds received from Embrace in 2020-2021 have allowed the CAOE to fund treatment at the Maryamana Hospital that the poor could not otherwise afford. A subsequent grant in 2022-3 enabled a continuation of the responsive programme and introduced preventative care in the form of breast cancer screening.  In addition to the provision of general medicine/ chronic drugs, this grant will continue the responsive programme in screening of breast cancer with the addition of implementing cervical and prostate cancer screenings.
