Description | Batnaya, a historically Christian town located within the Alqosh District, suffered immense damage during the ISIS occupation of the Nineveh Plain. As part of the Chaldean Church's broader strategy for post-conflict recovery, the construction of a new Catholic school in Batnaya was prioritized to help restore community life, provide access to education, and encourage displaced families to return to their homes. With the generous support of the Hungarian Episcopal Conference, a fund of USD 499,119 was provided in 2018 to build a modern educational facility designed to serve the children of both returning residents and neighboring communities. The school stands not only as a physical structure but also as a symbol of hope, resilience, and continuity for a Christian presence in the region. This project forms part of the Church’s long-term vision for educational empowerment and peaceful coexistence in Iraq. Beyond bricks and mortar, the school is rooted in Catholic values, welcoming students from diverse backgrounds and offering a safe, inclusive environment for holistic development—spiritually, intellectually, and socially. |

Reconstruction – Housing and Church Infrastructure |
Description |
As part of the wider post-ISIS recovery effort in the Nineveh Plain, the town of Teleskof—home to a historically vibrant Christian community—faced the daunting task of rebuilding after widespread destruction. The homes and sacred spaces that defined community life had been damaged or desecrated during the occupation, leading to displacement and spiritual loss. In 2018, Iraqi Christians in Need (ICIN) stepped forward with a generous donation of USD 108,000 to support both the reconstruction of housing and restoration work on local churches. This funding allowed for the rehabilitation of several family homes and contributed to the repair of the Church of St. George, reestablishing the heart of worship and community gathering in the town. This support was not only financial—it was a moral affirmation for the people of Teleskof that their lives, faith, and culture were not forgotten. Thanks to ICIN’s solidarity, families were able to return to safe homes and reconnect with their parish, reigniting hope in a town that had endured displacement and trauma. |

Beneficiaries | Internally Displaced Christian Families Returning to Karamlesh |
Amount | US$ 303,656.40 |
Category of Support | IDPs – Poor, Housing |
Description | Karamlesh, one of the ancient Christian villages of the Nineveh Plain, endured forced depopulation and destruction during the ISIS occupation. As displaced families slowly began to return following liberation, urgent humanitarian intervention was needed to address their housing needs and reestablish basic living conditions. The Chaldean Church, in its mission to preserve the Christian presence and dignity in the region, identified Karamlesh as a critical area for stabilization and return. In partnership with Malteser International – Cologne, a total of USD 303,656.40 was allocated to support housing rehabilitation and direct aid to poor and vulnerable IDP families. This funding made it possible to rebuild homes, restore living conditions, and provide essential household assistance for families returning after years of displacement. The initiative prioritized those with the greatest vulnerability—elderly, large families, and economically challenged households. The project not only enabled physical resettlement but contributed to the revitalization of Christian life in Karamlesh. Through this act of solidarity, Malteser International helped restore a sense of permanence, dignity, and hope in a town that continues to serve as a symbol of Christian resilience and rootedness in Iraq’s diverse social fabric. |
